Mobile applications with artificial intelligence for people with disabilities

The Universidad Técnica del Norte, through the International Project “Building the future of Latin America: engaging women into STEM”, organized a series of conferences called “Entrepreneurial Culture”, the third talk was about “Mobile applications with artificial intelligence for people with disabilities” as part of the Guidance and Mentoring activities of the project. This activity was intended for students and graduates of the different careers of the University.

The Talk provided information on the different technological tools that support people with disabilities. At the beginning of the talk, statistical data were presented on the number of people with hearing and visual problems. The TALOV Company is dedicated to the development of technologies for people with disabilities. In recent years, they have worked to create a more inclusive and accessible world, resulting in the creation of the application called SPEAKLIZ. This application combines the powers and advantages of artificial intelligence with the daily use of the mobile phone, to translate sign language into speech and text in real time. In the case of people with visual disabilities, the VISION application was created, to provide greater independence. Besides, the speaker said that they are aiming for their technology to be applied mainly in education since it is the basis of a fair and equitable society.

The online event was completely free and took place on December 1, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (GTM-5) through the Teams platform. As a result of the event, 90 registered students were obtained, with the participation of students from all the Faculties (5) of the Technical University of the North.
